My Unexpected Trip To Baguio City

Last Sunday (March 29), I was able to do something which I consider another 'milestone' in my entire existence. I went to Baguio City without any reservations or planning whatsoever. I've been there numerous times but this is my first unplanned travel. It is so impulsive and definitely beyond my comfort zone. I will never go to places farther than Manila without planning ahead of time. It is totally insane and out of the blue. The day before (Saturday afternoon to be exact), me and my workmates were talking about how good Baguio is especially this summer. It gave me an idea to go to Baguio at that very moment. I even told one of my colleague that I'll be leaving later that evening and she didn't believe me.

My adventure started at 12:30 am (it's already Sunday). Every bus was fully booked both the regular and first class since it's the Lenten Week. Almost everyone from the Metro wants to go to the province. I was told by the ticketing lady that the next available trip will be at 7am and that's six hours of waiting time. I was about to accept my defeat when I the guard assisting the passengers for 1am trip said that I can wait in the chance passengers queue since not all who booked on their scheduled trip was  able to make it on time or they were able to ride the earlier trip as chance passengers as well. Needless to say, I was able to take the 2am trip.

I arrived at about 8am and the first thing I did was to secure my trip back to Manila. I learnt my lesson! Luckily I was easily able to get a place to stay. Here's the picture of the lobby where I stayed. I wasn't able to get a decent picture of my room since I was too tired.

The first place I visited was Burnham Park. For me, it's family friendly. There's a man-made lake where you can rent one of these fancy boats for about P150 for thirty minutes. You can also hire someone to row it for you.

Aside from boating, you can also rent a bike (P40/hr) or a pedicab (P50/hr). There's also a lot of street vendors where you can buy strawberry ice cream, green mangoes with spicy salt and crispy pork skin in case you're hungry.

The next day, I woke up late. I took a quick shower and head on to my next destination: Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad which is approximately 6km away from Baguio according to Google Maps. You can take the jeepneys near Rizal Park and it only costs P11.

It's quite sunny and windy when I arrived. I can say that Strawberry Farm is your pasalubong  mecca. There's actually a lot to choose from: peanut brittle, lengua de gato, crinkles, key chains..the list go on. I bought fresh strawberries and a bottle of strawberry preserve. You can also  experience strawberry picking for only P400.

Next, I headed to Mines View Park.  I took a taxi this time and it's  worth it. I praise Baguio taxi cab drivers for being honest. They always return even the last centavo of your change.

Mines View Park is an observation deck where you can view the mining town of Itogon. What I actually love is the vast selection of bonsai plants they sell in the park. I was actually tempted to buy one. The grilled dried squid and corn cobs were heaven!

This unexpected trip is a liberating experience for me. It started out as a blank slate with a bit of impulsiveness on the side. It also opens my mind to the world of travelling. I already listed the places that I want to visit and I am beginning to save up for it. This trip made me realize that life really starts at the end of your comfort zone and I am missing out a lot of things. Impulsive decisions aren't bad after all. Just say YES!
